King Solomon is David’s son. He is a very impressive man. He is most famous for his great wisdom. People from all over the world, Kings and Queens came to Solomon to hear his wisdom. During Solomon’s reign there was peace in Israel. Up until this point most of the years since Israel moved into the promised land have been full of fighting and bloodshed. But Solomon brings peace. Solomon also built the Temple in Jerusalem, so the place of worship is no longer a tent in Shiloh. But an amazing structure that glorifies God simply by all of the wealth of materials in the building alone.

As I was reading about Solomon I was thinking. This man is truly amazing. He is following God completely and God is blessing him, and Solomon is blessing people from all nations with Wisdom. And I wondered why is this not the man that God said is a man after his own heart?

But then I got to chapter 11 of 1 Kings. Solomon had an issue, and it basically the same issue that David had, women. Solomon liked foreign women the most. In fact Solomon had 700 foreign wives. And the main problem God had with this was not their nationality, but that they caused Solomon to worship other gods. And all through the Old Testament this is the one issue that God takes most seriously. God is never pleased when people worship anything except for Him.

And God had already said “You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.” in regard to foreign women. This was a command for all of Israel including the King.

And Solomon’s wives did this very thing to Solomon.

“He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the Lord.” — 1 Kings 11:3

Solomon went so far as to buld temples to other gods for his wives! David never committed this Sin.

Well God was not at all pleased by this. “Since you have not kept my covenant and have disobeyed my decrees I will surely tear the Kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants. But for the sake of your father, David, I will not do this while you are still alive. I will take the kingdom away from your son. And even so, I will not take away the entire kingdom; I will let him be king of one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, my chosen city.” — 1 Kings 11:11-13

So essentially because of Solomon’s sin Israel becomes divided into two nations. David’s descendants rule only one tribe, Judah, while another King will rule the rest of the tribes of Israel.

God takes sexual sin seriously. And even the wisest man in the world, King Solomon, fell victim to this. So all Christian men need to realize that we are all prone to this, so we must always be on guard to make sure we do not follow Solomon down the path of sexual sin, because that will turn us away from God.
