Well I ended up taking a few days off from my reading. Probably not the best idea I have ever had. But I started up again today and read the first half of the Book of Judges.

In short this book describes how Israel did exactly what God said they would do when He spoke with Moses in Deuteronomy. Israel began worshiping other gods. So God let Israel’s enemies overcome them. Once this happened the people would repent and cry out to God. So God hears their cries and raises up a Judge to lead Israel to fight off their enemies and take their land back. Then when the Judge dies the people once again start worshiping other gods. There are details for each Judge but basically this is the story with each Judge.

But I want to outline some interesting facts about the Judges that I have read about so far:

Ehud – stabbed a very, very, very fat man.
Deborah – yes, a female Judge.
Gideon – member of the weakest clan in Israel and defeated thousands of Midianites with only 300 men. Also declined becoming King.
Tola – from the tribe of Issachar
Jair – rode on donkeys
Jephtah – mother was a prostitute, sacrificed his daughter because of a vow he had made with God. Battled another tribe of Israel, Ephraim. So he was involved in the first civil war in Israel’s history.
Izban – Judged Israel for 7 years and had his 30 sons and 30 daughters all marry members of other clans in israel.
Elon – Judged Israel for only 10 years and was from the tribe of Zebulun.
Abdon – rode on donkeys
Samson – Filled with the Holy Spirit but doesn’t obey God’s laws. He is crazy strong and killed 1,000 men with a donkey skull he found on the ground.
